The Shire have engaged Michelle Wong from Bust-a-Burpee to present her Disability and Inclusion in Community Support Workshop as a part of the Clubs for All series.

This workshop is designed to develop the skills of coaches, officials, and committee members to better their practices when working with individuals with a disability and be as inclusive as possible

The program is designed to give you ideas on how to create an inclusive physical activity program for all.

It will compliment your sport whilst engaging a wider membership base.

Is There a Better Way (ITaBW) have another round of their online program for FAMILIES and their Support Workers scheduled to commence on the 13th June 2022.

This 12-week program is just one way you can join them to explore and add to your understanding of why people experience stress or dysregulation which can lead to them showing us that they need support. Some of these ways can at times be of a concern or challenge our thinking about how to support them well. This program helps in understanding people's needs and how to support them and yourself to lead the best life possible.

What does the program look like?

• 12 weeks of self-paced and guided learning in an online format
• Access to 6 chapters of information equivalent to around 11 hours of learning for 12 months
• 4 group zoom sessions where we can personally connect and explore your individual needs
• Program booklet
• Access to other resources and tools you can use in your planning and support in an ongoing way

The cost of the program is $595 for a family or professional and $50 per support worker who attends with a family member.

This program is aimed at family members, and as such, they have priority for enrolments. The program may be funded through your NDIS plan, but if not, and access is prohibitive because of cost, we encourage you to contact ITaBW to discuss options.

Courses are capped at smaller groups of participants so they can connect on a more personal level with participants in coaching sessions. The next program will be starting soon, so get in quick to register your interest! But don’t worry, the program is run across the year. If you miss out this time around, they will let you know when the next one will start following your expression of interest. Once you've registered your interest, you will be contacted with some more details about the course and the link to enrol.

The Department of Communities (Communities) is seeking the views of Western Australians on its Disability Access and Inclusion Plan (DAIP) 2022-2027.

Your feedback will help Communities to finalise the plan, which undertook previous consultation with the community and agency staff.

Communities DAIP 2022-2027 is strongly aligned to the principles of A Western Australia for Everyone: State Disability Strategy 2020-2030, that aims to work towards a fully inclusive and accessible community.

This five-year DAIP will guide Communities to improve practice and policy focused on people with disability. It will also outline the actions, timeframes and responsibilities to be able to achieve set goals.

A final draft of the DAIP 2022-2027 is located on their website in PDF, Word and Easy Read formats, and is open for feedback.

Comment is accepted in the following ways:

• complete the survey
• write a formal submission, letter or email.

Who they want to hear from

Communities wants to hear from all Western Australians who would like to contribute.

They would particularly value feedback from:

• people with lived experience, including people with disability or family members, carers or guardians of people with disability
• advocacy or representative groups
• other interested individuals, representatives or organisations.

Confidentiality

Feedback received through submissions, letters and emails may be made publicly available online (via WA.gov.au) or may be quoted in reports and publications produced by Communities.

If you prefer your name to remain confidential, please tell them that in your feedback. Please note however that feedback provided to Communities can be subject to freedom of information requests, so please do not include any personal or confidential information about yourself that you do not wish to become available to the public.

Community consultation on Stage 2 reforms of the Transport Standards now open!

Consultation on Stage 2 reforms of the Disability Standards for Accessible Public Transport 2002 (Transport Standards) is now open from 15 March 2022 to 9 August 2022.

Stage 2 reforms of the Transport Standards includes 54 reform areas, detailed in 61 chapters in the Consultation Regulation Impact Statement (RIS) for public consultation (located in the documents section).

The Department has also arranged free public viewing access to referenced Australian Standards listed in the Consultation RIS. The recent Minister’s DAIP Report, tabled in Parliament late last year, is now available at https://www.wa.gov.au/system/files/2022-01/DAIP-Progress-Report-2020-21.pdf

The progress reports submitted by all public authorities small and large, metro, regional and remote last year, including by the Shire of Serpentine Jarrahdale, have been used to inform the report.

The passion, creativity and dedication of individuals across authorities whose contributions have made their organisations and communities more welcoming, accessible and inclusive is recognised by the Minister and the Department of Communities.

The National Disability Services administers the ACROD Parking Program, the Companion Card Program and the distribution of Changing Places keys to eligible Western Australians on behalf of the WA State Government.

To ensure as many people as possible are aware of the services and the eligibility criteria, we are offering free information sessions throughout February for people who may be directly eligible for one or more of the services.

Due to the current COVID mandates, these sessions will be offered online via Microsoft Teams.
